Wagoya House, inspired by the timeless mid-century Eichler homes, is a striking example of how classic architectural styles can be reimagined with contemporary flair. Nestled in the Westchester neighborhood of Los Angeles, this once unremarkable ranch-style house has undergone a stunning transformation, courtesy of Alloi, a design firm founded by Marcos Santa Ana in 2009. The result is a harmonious blend of natural materials, sustainability, and modern functionality, all wrapped in a design that pays homage to its architectural roots.
From Outdated Ranch to Architectural Masterpiece
Before its remarkable renovation, the original structure of Wagoya House was anything but inspiring. The home, clad in vinyl siding with leaky windows and a mismatched facade, lacked both character and energy efficiency. The yard, offering little privacy, failed to provide a relaxing outdoor space for the homeowners. However, with a vision for something extraordinary, Alloi reimagined the home using the Japanese post-and-beam construction method known as ‘wagoya,’ which inspired the home’s name. The result is a sanctuary where nature and modernity coexist in perfect harmony.
Embracing Natural Materials and Sustainable Design
A defining feature of Wagoya House is the extensive use of natural materials throughout both the interior and exterior. Vertical grain Douglas fir windows and doors create a cohesive aesthetic that carries from the outside in, enveloping the home in a warm, inviting atmosphere. A custom feature wall, composed of vertical wood slats, adds depth and texture to the front facade, with light and shadow playing off the surface as the day progresses.
The attention to detail extends to the house’s exterior features as well. A custom laser-cut metal plate displaying the house numbers adorns a front concrete wall, offering a modern touch that also serves a practical purpose. Made from corten steel, this plate will develop a natural patina over time, adding character as it weathers the elements.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living
The open living area of Wagoya House is a masterclass in seamless indoor-outdoor living. Expansive windows form a fluid connection between the interior spaces and the lush outdoors, inviting abundant natural light and creating a calming, spacious atmosphere. The living room, a focal point of the home, features a striking stone chimney that stands in contrast to the minimalist lines of the steel standing seam roof. Pale gray tiles cover the walls, lending a sleek, contemporary look, while a narrow rectangular window near the ceiling allows natural light to pour in. The integrated custom mirror and minimalist fixtures, including a satin chrome wall-mounted faucet and an undermount sink, contribute to the bathroom’s clean, elegant aesthetic. A rain shower with an optional handheld attachment and a recessed shampoo niche add both luxury and practicality, making the bathroom a true sanctuary.
Outdoor Spaces Designed for Privacy and Relaxation
The outdoor areas of Wagoya House are designed with privacy and relaxation in mind. A cozy patio, featuring a central fire pit, concrete seating areas with plush cushions, and subtle lantern lighting, creates an inviting space for evening gatherings or quiet moments under the stars. Enclosed by a minimalist steel gate, this outdoor seating area is both secure and serene, with lighting beneath the benches enhancing the warm ambiance.
